Sliding door systems solve the most common spatial problem in interior design: the swing arc. A standard hinged door needs roughly 0.7 m2 of clear floor space to open and close. A sliding door uses zero floor space, making it the obvious choice for small apartments, tight corridors, en-suite bathrooms, and walk-in closets where every square meter in your Riga apartment counts. Sliding systems are among the most practical upgrades you can make to any home in Latvia.
There are three main types of sliding systems, and choosing the right one depends on your wall situation and aesthetic preference:
Wall-mounted (external) systems use a visible rail mounted above the door opening. The door slides along the wall surface. This is the simplest to install,no wall modification needed, and works well for renovation projects. The rail and rollers are visible, which suits industrial and rustic aesthetics. Barn-door style hardware (exposed steel rail with large rollers) falls into this category.
Concealed-in-wall (pocket) systems hide the door inside a hollow wall cavity when open. The door slides into a steel cassette built into the wall, disappearing completely. This gives the cleanest result but requires building or modifying the wall to accommodate the cassette. The cassette must be installed during construction before plastering. Standard cassettes accommodate single doors from 60 cm to 120 cm wide.
Barn-door systems are a subcategory of wall-mounted systems with decorative, oversized hardware, typically black steel flat bars or round rails with large exposed rollers. They make a strong design statement and are popular for bedrooms, pantries, and bathroom entries in contemporary homes.
When choosing a sliding system, check the maximum door weight the rail supports. Standard systems handle 80-100 kg; glass doors and oversized panels need heavy-duty 120-150 kg rated systems. Also verify the soft-close mechanism, doors should decelerate smoothly in the last few centimeters rather than slamming into the stop.
AKB Buve offers 8 sliding system configurations from POL-SKONE and Porta, including wall-mounted, concealed-in-wall cassettes, and barn-door hardware. Visit Spilves iela 6 in Riga to see the mechanisms in operation and choose the right system for your space.
